Alina Zagitova won the gold medal in women’s singles figure skating at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The competition took place at Gangneung Ice Arena in South Korea on February 21 and 23, 2018. Representing the Olympic Athletes from Russia, Zagitova finished first overall with 239.57 points, narrowly defeating teammate Evgenia Medvedeva, who earned silver with 238.26 points. Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond won bronze.
Zagitova led the short program with 82.92 points, setting a world-best score at the time. She and Medvedeva tied for the highest free-skating score at 156.65, but Zagitova’s advantage in the short program gave her the title. Her victory came at age 15 years and 281 days.
This result is sometimes confused with the team event, held earlier at the same Games. Zagitova skated in that event too, helping the Olympic Athletes from Russia win silver. In the individual women’s singles event, however, her medal was gold.
