Which mathematician proved Fermat’s Last Theorem in 1994?

The story behind the answer

Andrew Wiles proved Fermat’s Last Theorem in 1994.

Fermat’s Last Theorem states that no positive integers a, b, and c satisfy aⁿ + bⁿ = cⁿ when n is an integer greater than 2. Pierre de Fermat wrote the claim in the margin of a book around 1637, saying he had found a remarkable proof but lacked space to record it.

Wiles, a British mathematician, presented a proof in 1993 after working privately for several years. A gap was discovered during peer review, but Wiles and Richard Taylor repaired it, and the corrected proof was published in 1995. The argument used advanced ideas from elliptic curves and modular forms rather than an elementary manipulation of Fermat’s equation.

The result is often described as a 1994 proof because the corrected work was completed that year. Wiles received the Abel Prize in 2016. Fermat’s original marginal note claimed an elementary proof, but no such proof has ever been found.
