Black Panther became the first superhero film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture after its 2018 release. Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, it was nominated at the 91st Academy Awards, held in 2019.
The film follows T’Challa, king of the fictional African nation Wakanda, as he confronts Erik Killmonger and debates how Wakanda should engage with the wider world. Its cultural impact, political themes, ensemble cast and production design helped it receive seven Oscar nominations, including Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
Black Panther did not win Best Picture, but it won three Oscars: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Original Score. Logan was also a landmark comic-book film and received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, but it was not nominated for Best Picture. Wonder Woman and The Avengers did not receive Best Picture nominations.
