Which Mars rover holds the record for longest distance traveled?

The story behind the answer

Opportunity holds the record for the longest distance traveled by a Mars rover. By the end of its mission, it had driven about 45.16 kilometers, or 28.06 miles, across Meridiani Planum and the rim of Endeavour Crater.

Opportunity was designed for a primary mission lasting only about 90 Martian days and was expected to travel roughly 1 kilometer. Instead, it operated for nearly 15 years after landing in January 2004. Its route included repeated scientific investigations of rocks, dunes, crater rims, and exposed geological layers shaped by ancient water.

The rover first surpassed the previous off-Earth driving record, held by the Soviet Lunokhod 2 lunar rover, in 2014. It later exceeded the distance of a marathon on another world and finished with a total journey more than forty times its original design target.

Perseverance and Curiosity are newer and highly capable, so they are common distractors. However, neither had surpassed Opportunity’s completed 45.16-kilometer total at the time represented by this record.
