Which Mars lander first detected marsquakes?
Answer
InSight
Answer
InSight
InSight was the first Mars lander to detect marsquakes.
NASA’s InSight lander touched down on Mars on 26 November 2018 in Elysium Planitia. Its Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, or SEIS, recorded vibrations produced by marsquakes and meteorite impacts. These measurements allowed scientists to investigate the planet’s crust, mantle, and core.
InSight’s first confirmed marsquake was detected in April 2019. Unlike Earth, Mars lacks active plate tectonics, so its seismic activity is generally weaker and arises from stresses in the planet’s interior and crust. The lander also carried a heat-flow probe, although the probe could not reach its planned depth. InSight ended its science mission after dust buildup reduced power from its solar panels.
