Which Mario Kart game was the first to feature the 200cc engine class?

The story behind the answer

Mario Kart 8 was the first Mario Kart game to feature the 200cc engine class. The faster class arrived in a free Wii U update on April 23, 2015, nearly a year after the game's original release.

Before 200cc, the series' fastest standard engine class was 150cc. At 200cc, karts travel dramatically faster and carry more momentum, changing how players approach corners, jumps, braking, and shortcuts. Many tracks that feel forgiving at 150cc require deliberate braking at 200cc, making the class a substantial challenge rather than simply a speed increase.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe included 200cc as part of its expanded version on Nintendo Switch. That creates a common mix-up: Deluxe is the more familiar modern release, but it did not originate the feature. Mario Kart 8 introduced it through post-launch content, alongside other additions such as new vehicles, downloadable tracks, and amiibo-related features.
