Which marathon is the only World Marathon Major held in Japan?

The story behind the answer

The Tokyo Marathon is the only World Marathon Major held in Japan.

Tokyo is part of the six-race Abbott World Marathon Majors series, alongside Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. The event takes place in Japan’s capital and is one of the country’s largest international road races.

The race began in 2007 and replaced earlier Tokyo-area marathon events. Its course passes major landmarks in the capital, including areas around Shinjuku, Asakusa and Ginza, before the finish near Tokyo Station.

Japan hosts many prominent marathons, including the Osaka Marathon and the Nagoya Women’s Marathon. However, those races are not members of the World Marathon Majors. That distinction makes Tokyo the unique Japanese answer.
