Which marathon is run partly along China’s Great Wall?

The story behind the answer

The Great Wall Marathon is the marathon run partly along China’s Great Wall.

The event was first held in 1999 and takes place near the Huangyaguan section of the wall in Tianjin Municipality. Its route combines ordinary roads and rural paths with a demanding section on the historic fortification itself.

Participants must tackle thousands of steps, steep climbs, and descents, making the race substantially different from a flat city marathon. The event offers a full marathon as well as shorter race distances, including a half marathon and a 10-kilometre race.

The Great Wall Marathon is often confused with major Chinese city races such as the Beijing Marathon. Those events are road races through urban areas, while the Great Wall Marathon is known specifically for its historic wall section and mountainous terrain.
