Which marathon hosted the 1967 race won by Derek Clayton in a world-record 2:09:36?
Answer
Fukuoka Marathon
Answer
Fukuoka Marathon
The Fukuoka Marathon hosted Derek Clayton’s 1967 world-record run of 2:09:36.
Clayton, representing Australia, became the first man to break 2 hours 10 minutes in an officially recognized marathon. He set the record at the Fukuoka International Marathon in Japan on 3 December 1967, improving the previous mark by more than two minutes.
Fukuoka was especially important in the development of elite marathon racing because it attracted strong international fields and offered fast conditions. Clayton’s record stood for more than seven years, until Britain’s Ian Thompson ran 2:09:12 in 1974.
The Fukuoka event is distinct from the Tokyo Marathon, which began much later as a mass-participation race. Fukuoka’s traditional international race was historically associated with leading male runners and was held over a certified road course.
