Answer
Men’s Olympic marathon
Answer
Men’s Olympic marathon
Frank Shorter won the men’s Olympic marathon at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Shorter, representing the United States, won in 2 hours 12 minutes 19.8 seconds. His victory made him the first American to win the Olympic marathon since 1904, when Thomas Hicks took the title in St. Louis.
Shorter’s triumph helped spark a major running boom in the United States during the 1970s. Television coverage brought marathon training and road racing to a much wider audience, and Shorter became one of the era’s most influential endurance athletes.
The Munich marathon was followed by a tragic interruption to the Games caused by the terrorist attack in the Olympic Village, but the marathon itself was held before the attack. Shorter later won silver at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, finishing behind East Germany’s Waldemar Cierpinski.
