Which marathon became the first to record more than 50,000 finishers in one race?
Answer
New York City Marathon
Answer
New York City Marathon
The New York City Marathon became the first marathon to record more than 50,000 finishers in one race.
The milestone was reached at the 2013 New York City Marathon, when 50,062 runners finished. The event is one of the world’s largest mass-participation marathons and is organized by New York Road Runners.
The course travels through all five boroughs of New York City: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. That citywide route contributes to the race’s distinctive atmosphere and enormous spectator support.
The 2013 edition took place after the 2012 race was canceled because of Hurricane Sandy. The large finisher total is different from the number of entrants or registered runners, which can be higher because not everyone starts or completes the course.
