Which male deity created the Japanese islands with Izanami?
Answer
Izanagi
Answer
Izanagi
Izanagi is the male deity who created the Japanese islands with Izanami in Japanese mythology.
In the Kojiki, Izanagi and Izanami are the youngest pair among the divine generations that emerge after heaven and earth take shape. The older kami give them a jeweled spear called Ame-no-Nuhoko and command them to solidify the drifting, watery world. When Izanagi stirs the primordial sea, brine dripping from the spear forms the island of Onogoro.
The pair then establish a home on Onogoro and perform a marriage ritual around a heavenly pillar. After correcting an improper first attempt, they produce the islands traditionally identified with Japan’s early archipelago, including Awaji, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Honshu. Together they are also credited with generating numerous kami.
Their story turns tragic when Izanami dies after giving birth to the fire deity Kagutsuchi. Izanagi follows her to Yomi, the land of the dead, but flees after seeing her transformed state. He later purifies himself, and important deities—including Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo—arise from that purification.
