Which main-series Pokémon games were the first fully 3D entries?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon X and Y were the first main-series Pokémon games presented with fully 3D graphics.

Released worldwide for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, the games moved the core series from primarily sprite-based presentation to polygonal character models, environments, battles, and animations. They take place in the Kalos region, which is inspired by France and includes the central city of Lumiose City.

The games also introduced the Fairy type, Mega Evolution, character customization, and the Pokémon-Amie feature. Their simultaneous worldwide launch was another major change for the franchise, reducing the long wait between regional releases.

Earlier games used 3D elements in specific contexts, so “first fully 3D entries” does not mean Pokémon had never displayed three-dimensional imagery before. Pokémon X and Y are credited with making 3D presentation the standard visual approach across the main adventure and battles.
