Which main-series Pokémon games were the first designed for Nintendo DS?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were the first main-series Pokémon games designed for Nintendo DS.

The games were released in Japan on September 28, 2006, beginning Generation IV. They used the Nintendo DS’s dual screens, touchscreen controls, wireless communication, and Wi-Fi capabilities. Their setting was the Sinnoh region, and their legendary mascots were Dialga and Palkia.

Diamond and Pearl expanded online interaction beyond the local link features of earlier games. Players could trade and battle through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, while the Pokétch used the lower touchscreen for tools such as a clock, calculator, and item finder. The games also allowed Pokémon transfers from Game Boy Advance cartridges through the Nintendo DS’s cartridge slots.

Pokémon Platinum followed as an enhanced version for the same system. HeartGold and SoulSilver were later Nintendo DS remakes, so they were not the first Pokémon titles designed for that hardware. Diamond and Pearl are also notable for launching the fourth generation and introducing 107 new Pokémon.
