CoroCoro Comic announced the 1996 giveaway for the secret Pokémon Mew.

The magazine’s May 1996 issue, released on April 15, publicized the Legendary Pokémon Offer. Readers could send in a postcard, and 20 entrants were selected to have Mew uploaded to their game cartridges.

Mew had been added to Pocket Monsters Red and Green late in development. It was not normally available through standard gameplay, and Nintendo had not initially told players that the Pokémon existed. The giveaway therefore transformed rumors into an official discovery event.

CoroCoro Comic was especially important to early Pokémon promotion in Japan. Its readership and manga coverage helped generate attention for the games at a time when Nintendo’s marketing expectations for Pokémon were relatively modest.
