The FTSE 100 was the London stock exchange index that fell sharply on Black Monday in 1987.
The FTSE 100, commonly called the Footsie, was launched in 1984 and tracks 100 major companies listed on the London Stock Exchange. During the international market panic on October 19, 1987, it fell by 26.45%, one of the largest one-day declines recorded by a major national stock index.
The fall followed the collapse in U.S. equities and occurred as markets around the world reacted to the same wave of fear. London’s decline was larger in percentage terms than the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s 22.6% drop that day.
The FTSE 100 is not the same as the broader FTSE All-Share Index. It is also unrelated to the German DAX and France’s CAC 40, which experienced their own declines during the international crash.
