Which London magazine first published “A Scandal in Bohemia” in 1891?

The story behind the answer

The Strand Magazine first published “A Scandal in Bohemia” in 1891.

The story appeared in the July 1891 issue and marked the beginning of Sherlock Holmes’s regular run in The Strand. Its appearance helped transform Holmes from the protagonist of two earlier novels into a hugely popular short-story character.

The magazine used illustrations by Sidney Paget, whose visual interpretations strongly influenced the familiar image of Holmes. Paget’s depiction of the detective helped establish details such as the deerstalker association, even though Doyle did not make that hat the defining everyday accessory it later became in popular culture.

The Strand became the principal publication venue for many Holmes stories. Its illustrated format, accessible price, and large circulation helped the detective reach a broad British readership. “A Scandal in Bohemia” also introduced Irene Adler, the woman Holmes regards as his intellectual equal.
