Big Ben's clock chimes are broadcast at midnight during London's New Year's Eve celebrations.
“Big Ben” is commonly used for the landmark, although the name properly refers to the Great Bell inside the Elizabeth Tower at the Palace of Westminster. The clock and its hourly chimes have become a familiar sound associated with national occasions, including the transition into a new year.
The clock tower was completed as part of the Palace of Westminster's rebuilding after the old palace burned in 1834. The Great Bell first struck in 1859, and the tower was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The London Eye is also a major New Year's Eve landmark, particularly for fireworks, but it is not the clock whose midnight chimes define the traditional broadcast.
