Which London landmark's clock bell is popularly known as Big Ben and features in the city's New Year's Eve broadcasts?

The story behind the answer

Elizabeth Tower is the London landmark whose clock bell is popularly known as Big Ben and features in New Year's Eve broadcasts.

The tower stands at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. Its clock began keeping time in 1859, and the great bell inside is officially the Great Bell of Westminster. “Big Ben” properly refers to the bell, although the name is commonly used for the tower and clock as well.

The tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. Before that, it was generally called the Clock Tower. Its four clock faces and hourly chimes have become internationally recognizable symbols of London.

Television and radio broadcasts use the chimes to mark midnight in the United Kingdom. The tower underwent a major conservation project from 2017, during which the regular chimes were largely silenced, with limited exceptions for important occasions.
