The London Eye is the main launch site and visual focus of London's New Year's Eve fireworks.
London's modern public celebration developed into a major annual event along the River Thames, with fireworks fired from the London Eye, nearby barges, and locations along the riverbank. The Ferris wheel's position opposite the Palace of Westminster gives broadcasts a distinctive composition: the wheel, the Thames, and the illuminated parliamentary buildings appear together in the skyline.
The display is organized by the Mayor of London and is normally synchronized with the midnight countdown. Viewing zones along the river are ticketed, while the event is also carried nationally and internationally. The London Eye itself opened to the public in 2000 as the Millennium Wheel before later adopting its current name.
Big Ben is often given as the answer because its clock marks midnight, but it is not the fireworks' principal launch structure. Tower Bridge is another frequent confusion because it is a famous London river landmark, though it lies farther east.
