The London Eye is the focal landmark for London's televised New Year's Eve fireworks display.
The giant observation wheel stands on the South Bank of the River Thames opposite the Palace of Westminster. Fireworks are launched from the wheel, nearby barges, and other locations along the river, creating a display designed to be viewed across central London.
The London celebration is closely associated with the midnight chimes of Big Ben, although Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell in the Elizabeth Tower rather than the tower itself. The fireworks and the clock chimes are related parts of the broadcast event, but the London Eye is the landmark most directly used as the display's visual centerpiece.
The wheel opened to the public in 2000 as the Millennium Wheel. Its later name, London Eye, became the familiar identity used in descriptions of the annual fireworks.
