Which London foundry cast the Liberty Bell, a historic symbol associated with America250?

The story behind the answer

The Whitechapel Bell Foundry cast the Liberty Bell, a historic symbol associated with America250.

The Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly ordered the bell in 1751 from the London firm Lester and Pack. The bell was cast in 1752 and shipped to Philadelphia. Lester and Pack later became known as the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which is why historical accounts may mention either name.

When the bell arrived, it reportedly cracked during an initial test. Philadelphia metalworkers John Pass and John Stow melted it down and recast it twice. The final bell bears the words “Pass and Stow” and the date 1753, even though its original casting occurred in London.

The bell was intended for the Pennsylvania State House, now Independence Hall. Its later crack, biblical inscription, and association with abolitionism transformed it into a national emblem. The foundry connection is sometimes overlooked because the bell’s Philadelphia history is much more prominent.
