Which Lexus model was the first hybrid from the luxury brand?

The story behind the answer

The first hybrid from the Lexus brand was the Lexus RX 400h.

Lexus unveiled the RX 400h at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, and production began in 2005. It was based on the second-generation RX, known in gasoline form as the RX 330 in North America. The model combined a 3.3-liter V6 with electric motor-generators and Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system.

The RX 400h is often described as the world’s first luxury hybrid SUV, but it was also significant within Lexus itself: it launched the brand’s hybrid lineup. The GS 450h followed in 2006 as Lexus’s second hybrid and the first luxury hybrid sport sedan. The LS 600h arrived later, while the CT 200h did not debut until 2010.

The “400” designation did not indicate a conventional 4.0-liter engine. Instead, Lexus used it to suggest performance comparable to a larger-displacement vehicle. In Japan, the closely related vehicle was sold as the Toyota Harrier Hybrid.
