Which Lewis Carroll book is the sequel to 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'?

The story behind the answer

The Lewis Carroll sequel to *Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland* is *Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There*.

Published in December 1871, the book returns Alice to a surreal world, but this time she enters it by passing through a mirror. The setting is structured around a chess game: Alice advances across a landscape as a chess piece and encounters figures such as the Red Queen, Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and the White Knight.

Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford. The sequel followed *Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland*, which was published in 1865 and grew from stories Carroll told Alice Liddell and her sisters.

A frequent mix-up comes from adaptations that blend both books. “Jabberwocky” is a famous poem inside *Through the Looking-Glass*, while *The Hunting of the Snark* and *Sylvie and Bruno* are separate Carroll works. John Tenniel illustrated both Alice books.
