Which Leonardo da Vinci invention is often described as an early mechanical robot?

The story behind the answer

The invention often described as an early mechanical robot is Leonardo’s robot.

Leonardo designed the mechanical knight around 1495, probably for a festival at the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. The knight was intended to sit, stand, raise its visor, and move its arms through a system of pulleys, cables, and gears operated by a hand crank. Its armor-like exterior made it resemble a human soldier.

No original robot survives, and its exact capabilities remain uncertain because Leonardo’s drawings and notes are incomplete. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a reconstruction based on the available evidence and showed that the mechanism could perform several humanlike motions.

Calling it a robot is convenient but historically modern. Leonardo’s machine was a mechanical automaton, not an electronic or programmable robot. Its significance lies in combining human anatomy, theatrical spectacle, and mechanical engineering into one ambitious Renaissance design.
