Leonardo da Vinci designed cranes with rotating platforms to move heavy loads across building sites.
His construction machines combined wooden frames, ropes, pulleys, gears, and counterweights. A rotating platform allowed a load to be lifted and then moved sideways without relocating the entire base. This arrangement was especially useful for placing stones and other materials during large building projects.
Leonardo’s crane studies formed part of his broader work on mechanics and architecture. He examined how force, leverage, friction, and balance could make difficult labor more efficient. His drawings often show several possible mechanisms rather than a single finished machine.
The design should not be confused with a simple winch. A winch mainly winds rope around a drum; a crane combines lifting with controlled movement of a load.
