Which Leonardo da Vinci design is often described as the first parachute?
Answer
Pyramidal parachute
Answer
Pyramidal parachute
Leonardo da Vinci’s parachute design was a pyramidal parachute.
Leonardo drew the design in the Codex Atlanticus, generally dated to about 1485. It consists of a pyramid-shaped canopy supported by wooden poles and covered with cloth. His notes proposed that a person could descend safely from a great height using the structure.
The design is an important early parachute concept, but Leonardo did not demonstrate it. Modern tests of replicas have shown that the geometry can create enough drag for a controlled descent, although a rigid wooden frame makes the device substantially different from a modern soft parachute.
Popular histories sometimes call Leonardo the inventor of the parachute. A more precise description is that he produced one of the earliest surviving detailed parachute designs. Fausto Veranzio published another early parachute design in 1616, while André-Jacques Garnerin made a documented parachute ascent and descent in 1797.
