Which lemur is the largest living member of the lemur family and lives in Madagascar’s rainforests?

The story behind the answer

The indri is the largest living member of the lemur family and lives in Madagascar’s rainforests.

Indris are found in eastern Madagascar, especially in humid primary forests. They are famous for their loud, rising calls, which help family groups maintain contact across dense vegetation. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, fruit, and flowers.

Unlike many lemurs, indris have almost no visible tail; the short tail is only a few centimetres long. Their powerful hind legs help them leap between tree trunks, while their black-and-white coats make them distinctive among Madagascar’s primates.

Indris are critically endangered because forest clearing, fuelwood collection, and hunting have reduced and fragmented their habitat. They are difficult to keep in captivity, so conservation is focused largely on protecting wild forest.
