Answer
Yu the Great
Which legendary emperor controlled the Great Flood? Yu the Great is the legendary ruler credited with controlling China’s Great Flood. His achievement is remembered in the story often called “Great Yu Controls the Waters,” one of the foundational legends of early Chinese civilization.
According to the traditional account, Yu inherited the task from his father, Gun, whose system of dikes and dams had failed. Yu adopted a different strategy: he dredged riverbeds, opened channels, and redirected floodwater toward fields and the sea. The story says he worked for thirteen years, passing his own home several times without stopping because the flood-control work remained unfinished.
After the waters were brought under control, Yu gained enormous prestige and succeeded Shun as ruler. He is also credited with founding the Xia dynasty, traditionally regarded as China’s first dynasty. This connects flood control with the origin of hereditary kingship in Chinese historical tradition.
The story is mythological, though archaeological research has explored whether a major Yellow River flood around 1920 BCE may have helped inspire it. Yao and Shun are associated with the era of the flood, but Yu is the figure who completes the control project.
