Pyxis helped turn Pandora’s pithos into the familiar idea of a box.
The Greek source describes a pithos, a large storage jar. During the Renaissance, the humanist Erasmus translated the term into Latin as pyxis, a word associated with a box or small container. This translation helped establish the wording that eventually became the English expression “Pandora’s box.”
The change illustrates how myths evolve through language. The story’s central themes remained recognizable, but the physical object changed in the cultural imagination. Modern audiences usually picture a lidded box, while ancient audiences would have understood a large storage vessel. The translation did not erase the myth; it gave it a new form that became much more familiar in later European languages.
