Which Latin phrase was adopted for the Great Seal of the United States in 1782?

The story behind the answer

E pluribus unum was adopted for the Great Seal of the United States in 1782.

The Latin phrase means “Out of many, one.” It appears on a scroll held in the eagle’s beak on the seal’s obverse, expressing the union formed from the individual states. Charles Thomson, secretary of the Continental Congress, submitted the final design, which Congress adopted on June 20, 1782.

E pluribus unum was associated with the United States long before the official national motto became In God We Trust in 1956. The phrase also appeared on U.S. coins beginning in 1795 and remains part of the Great Seal’s symbolism. Annuit coeptis and Novus ordo seclorum are separate Latin phrases on the seal’s reverse, so they are related but not interchangeable answers.
