The word “quinceañera” comes from Spanish.
It is formed from quince, meaning “fifteen,” and a feminine ending associated with a girl or young woman. In Spanish-speaking communities, the term can refer both to the celebrant and, by extension, to the celebration held for her fifteenth birthday.
The word is sometimes confused with quince años, another Spanish expression used for the event. Quince años literally means “fifteen years,” while quinceañera identifies the female celebrant. The masculine counterpart is quinceañero, although traditions and terminology vary among families and countries.
The celebration is especially associated with Mexico, Latin America, Spain-influenced communities, and Latino communities in the United States. Customs may include a church service, a formal court, symbolic gifts, a special dress, and choreographed dances, but no single program is universal.
