Spanish supplies the word quinceañera.
The term combines quince, the Spanish word for fifteen, with a feminine noun ending. In ordinary usage, quinceañera can identify the young woman celebrating her fifteenth birthday and, by extension, the celebration itself. The related phrase quince años literally means “fifteen years.”
Spanish-speaking countries and communities use the term across the Americas, although the customs surrounding the event differ considerably. A celebration in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, or a Latino community in the United States may share the name while having different music, food, clothing, religious practices, and family rituals.
Portuguese, Italian, and French are neighboring Romance languages, but they do not supply the standard word quinceañera. The ñ is also a specifically Spanish spelling feature in this term.
