Spanish supplies the word “quince” in the name quinceañera.
In Spanish, quince means fifteen. The term quinceañera is therefore directly tied to the age that defines the celebration. The ñ is also a distinctive Spanish letter, pronounced with a sound similar to the “ny” in the English word canyon.
The celebration’s vocabulary includes other Spanish terms, such as damas for female attendants, chambelanes for male attendants, and padrinos for sponsors. Families may use English or another language in daily life while retaining these traditional names for ceremonial roles.
Portuguese also has a related birthday tradition, often called festa de debutantes, but Portuguese is not the source of the word quince in quinceañera. The name itself is Spanish even when the celebration takes place outside a Spanish-speaking country.
