Which landmark in Moscow is crowned by colorful onion domes on Red Square?

The story behind the answer

Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow is crowned by colorful onion domes on Red Square.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral is formally called the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat. It was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. Construction took place from 1555 to 1561 on the southern edge of Red Square.

The building is a group of chapels arranged around a central church, producing its distinctive irregular silhouette. Its domes are brightly patterned and differ in shape and color, although the current appearance reflects repainting and later alterations. The cathedral’s popular name honors Basil the Blessed, a revered Russian holy fool whose tomb lies inside.

A persistent legend says Ivan blinded the architects so they could not create anything equally beautiful. Historians have found no reliable evidence for that story. The cathedral is part of the Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage site, but it is not inside the Kremlin walls.
