London Marathon runners cross Tower Bridge near the start of the course.
The London Marathon route begins in Greenwich and Blackheath, then travels west through several parts of the capital. Tower Bridge appears early in the race, carrying runners across the River Thames before the route continues toward the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf.
Tower Bridge is one of London’s best-known landmarks, recognized by its two towers and movable central roadway. It is often confused with London Bridge, a separate crossing located farther upstream.
The race was founded by Chris Brasher and John Disley and was first held in 1981. Its finish has changed over time, but the route’s passage across Tower Bridge remains one of the event’s defining visual moments.
