Which land animal is the fastest over short sprints?

The story behind the answer

The cheetah is the fastest land animal over short sprints.

Its body is built for explosive acceleration rather than endurance. A flexible spine lengthens each stride, powerful hindlimbs drive the animal forward, and a long tail helps it balance during sharp turns. Reliable measurements place its top speed around 104 km/h, or 65 mph.

A cheetah can accelerate from 0 to more than 97 km/h in under three seconds. That burst is useful in pursuit hunts, but it cannot last long because sprinting rapidly depletes energy reserves and generates intense heat. Typical chases last only a few dozen seconds.

The pronghorn is a frequent source of confusion. It is slower in a peak sprint but can maintain high speed far longer, making it the better long-distance runner. Horses and lions are also fast, yet neither matches the cheetah’s combination of acceleration and short-distance speed.
