Which lake is the world's largest tropical lake?

The story behind the answer

Lake Victoria is the world's largest tropical lake.

It lies in East Africa, shared by Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. Covering about 59,947 square kilometres, it is also Africa's largest lake by surface area and the world's second-largest freshwater lake by surface area, after Lake Superior.

The lake occupies a shallow depression and receives most of its water directly from rainfall. Its only outflow is the Victoria Nile, which leaves the lake near Jinja, Uganda. The Kagera River is its largest tributary.

A common mix-up is confusing “largest tropical lake” with “largest freshwater lake.” Lake Victoria holds the tropical title, but Lake Superior is larger by freshwater surface area. Lake Victoria is also famous for its many endemic cichlid fish, though introduced Nile perch and other environmental pressures have harmed native species.
