Which king ordered the massacre of the innocents?

The story behind the answer

Which king ordered the massacre of the innocents? Herod the Great is the king who, in Matthew’s Nativity account, ordered the massacre of the innocents. After magi came seeking the newborn “king of the Jews,” Herod learned that prophecy associated the Messiah with Bethlehem. When the magi did not return, Matthew says Herod ordered the killing of boys aged two and under in Bethlehem and its surrounding area.

According to the same story, Joseph was warned in a dream and fled with Mary and Jesus to Egypt. The family returned only after Herod’s death, later settling in Nazareth. The episode echoes Pharaoh’s attempted destruction of Israelite children in Exodus and presents Jesus as a threatened deliverer.

Herod the Great ruled Judea as a Roman client king from 37 to 4 BC. He was known both for major building projects, including the expansion of the Jerusalem Temple, and for ruthless treatment of perceived rivals. Matthew’s account therefore fits his established reputation for political suspicion and violence.

The massacre appears only in Matthew and is not independently confirmed by Josephus or the other Gospels. That historical uncertainty does not change the standard answer to the biblical-literary question.
