Which Kepler-90 planet was found in 2017 using Google machine learning on Kepler data?

The story behind the answer

Kepler-90i was the Kepler-90 planet found in 2017 using Google machine learning on Kepler data.

NASA, Google, and researchers at the University of Texas announced Kepler-90i on 14 December 2017. A deep-learning neural network examined Kepler light curves, searching for the tiny, repeated dips in starlight produced when a planet transits its star. The system had already been known to contain seven planets, but the algorithm recovered a weak signal that earlier searches had missed.

Kepler-90i is a super-Earth about 1.32 times Earth’s radius. It circles its host star every 14.45 days at only about 0.107 astronomical units, making it extremely hot and probably tidally locked. Its discovery gave Kepler-90 eight known planets, tying it with the Solar System at the time.

The machine-learning method did not replace astronomical confirmation: researchers still inspected the signal and tested whether it was consistent with a real transit. Google’s same analysis also helped identify Kepler-80g.
