Which Kenyan volcano is the country’s highest mountain, rising to 5,199 metres?

The story behind the answer

Mount Kenya is the Kenyan volcano and country’s highest mountain, rising to 5,199 metres.

Mount Kenya is an ancient, deeply eroded stratovolcano located just south of the equator. Its highest summit, Batian, reaches 5,199 metres, while Nelion is slightly lower. The mountain’s original volcanic cone was much higher before erosion removed large sections and exposed resistant rock and volcanic plumbing.

The mountain has glaciers near its summit, although they have retreated substantially over the past century. Mount Kenya National Park and Natural Forest are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting the area’s ecological and cultural importance.

Mount Kenya is sometimes confused with Mount Kilimanjaro because both are prominent East African mountains near the equator. Kilimanjaro is taller and lies in Tanzania; Mount Kenya is the highest point in Kenya. The name Kenya is commonly linked to interpretations of a local expression referring to the mountain’s brightness or whiteness.
