Which kami is the god of warriors and archery?

The story behind the answer

Which kami is the god of warriors and archery? Hachiman is the kami associated with warriors, war, and archery.

Hachiman is a syncretic Shinto-Buddhist deity whose worship became especially important among Japan’s military class. In Shinto tradition, he is often identified with the deified spirit of Emperor Ōjin, a semi-legendary ruler traditionally dated to the late third or early fourth century. His messenger is the dove, while the bow and arrow became prominent symbols of his martial identity.

Hachiman worship expanded during the Heian period, when warrior families such as the Seiwa Genji and Taira came to revere him. His importance grew further under Minamoto no Yoritomo, founder of the Kamakura shogunate, and Hachiman became a protector of the samurai class. Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū in Kamakura is one of his best-known shrines.

A common mix-up is with Futsunushi and Takemikazuchi, who are also martial kami. They are more strongly linked with swords, thunder, conquest, and specific shrine traditions, whereas Hachiman is especially identified with archery and the warrior community.
