The jumping spider species known for solving complex puzzles is Portia fimbriata. This Australian species belongs to the genus Portia, a group of spider-hunting jumping spiders famous for unusually flexible behavior.

Researchers have tested P. fimbriata with a novel “confinement problem”: a spider was placed on a small island surrounded by water and had to discover whether leaping and swimming, or swimming alone, would lead to safety. The spiders used trial and error, remembered which choice worked, and changed tactics after failure.

Portia fimbriata also plans lengthy detours when hunting other spiders. It may walk out of sight of its prey, choose a route around a web, and descend on a silk line from behind. This is more than a simple reflex, although scientists carefully avoid equating spider behavior directly with human reasoning.

A common mix-up is confusing the species with the whole genus: several Portia species show impressive hunting skills, but P. fimbriata is one of the best-known examples in laboratory problem-solving research.
