Which J.R.R. Tolkien character is the father of Faramir and Boromir?

The story behind the answer

Denethor II is the father of Faramir and Boromir in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Denethor is the twenty-sixth and final Ruling Steward of Gondor before Aragorn’s return as king. He governs from Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring. His sons, Boromir and Faramir, serve Gondor in different ways: Boromir is a prominent warrior and member of the Fellowship, while Faramir commands forces in Ithilien.

Denethor strongly favors Boromir, whose boldness and military reputation match his expectations. After Boromir dies at Amon Hen, Denethor becomes increasingly despairing. He also uses a palantír, or seeing-stone, and believes the strength of Sauron makes Gondor’s defeat unavoidable. His choices during the siege of Minas Tirith lead to his death.

Denethor is sometimes confused with Ecthelion II, his father and predecessor as Steward. Théoden is the king of Rohan, not Gondor. Denethor’s title is Ruling Steward, because Gondor’s throne has remained vacant since the departure of its royal line.
