Which Jewish teenager kept a famous diary while hiding in Amsterdam during the Holocaust?

The story behind the answer

Anne Frank was the Jewish teenager who kept a famous diary while hiding in Amsterdam during the Holocaust. She and her family entered hiding in July 1942 in a concealed annex behind Otto Frank’s business premises.

Anne wrote about daily life, fear, relationships, and her ambitions as a writer. The family and four other people remained hidden for more than two years before the annex was discovered in August 1944. Anne and her sister Margot died at Bergen-Belsen in early 1945; the exact dates are not known.

Otto Frank, Anne’s father and the only member of the annex group known to have survived the camps, later arranged for the diary to be published. Its Dutch title is Het Achterhuis, commonly translated as The Diary of a Young Girl. The diary is not a complete record of the Holocaust, but it offers a personal account of persecution and hiding.
