Which Jewish season of solemn holidays begins with Rosh Hashanah?

The story behind the answer

Rosh Hashanah begins the Jewish season known as the High Holy Days.

The High Holy Days, also called the Yamim Nora’im or Days of Awe, center on judgment, repentance, remembrance, and renewal. They begin with Rosh Hashanah on 1 Tishrei and lead to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, on 10 Tishrei.

The intervening period is commonly called the Ten Days of Repentance. It encourages self-examination, reconciliation, prayer, and making amends. Rosh Hashanah is therefore both a New Year festival and the opening of a serious spiritual season.

The High Holy Days are not the same as the Three Weeks, a mourning period connected with the destruction of the Temples, or the Counting of the Omer, which runs between Passover and Shavuot. Hanukkah belongs to a different part of the Jewish calendar.
