The first Wrangler, designated YJ, was introduced in 1986 as a 1987 model after the CJ line ended. American Motors developed it before Chrysler completed its acquisition of AMC. The Wrangler preserved the familiar open-bodied, body-on-frame Jeep formula but introduced updated engineering, improved handling, and greater comfort.

The YJ still used solid axles, leaf springs, and part-time four-wheel drive, linking it clearly to the CJ-7. However, it had a wider track, suspension refinements, and rectangular headlamps—an appearance change that distinguished the first Wrangler from earlier CJs.
