Which Japanese prime minister led the government during Japan’s final surrender decision in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Kantarō Suzuki was Japan’s prime minister during the government’s final surrender decision in 1945.

Suzuki became prime minister in April 1945, during the closing months of World War II. His cabinet faced military defeat, severe shortages, the loss of Japan’s maritime supply routes, and the growing likelihood of an Allied invasion of the home islands.

After Hiroshima was bombed on 6 August and the Soviet Union declared war on Japan on 8 August, Suzuki helped direct the cabinet and Supreme Council for the Direction of the War through its surrender debates. The leadership remained divided, but Emperor Hirohito intervened and supported accepting the Allied terms. Suzuki’s government then communicated Japan’s acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration.

Suzuki is sometimes confused with Hideki Tojo, who had been prime minister earlier in the war, or with Prince Higashikuni, who became prime minister after the surrender. Suzuki resigned in October 1945, after Japan had formally capitulated and the Allied occupation had begun.
