Which Japanese official signed the 1945 surrender documents as Japan’s foreign minister?

The story behind the answer

Mamoru Shigemitsu signed the 1945 surrender documents as Japan’s foreign minister.

Shigemitsu led the Japanese delegation aboard USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. Wearing formal diplomatic attire and using a cane after losing a leg in an assassination attempt, he signed on behalf of the Japanese government. General Yoshijirō Umezu, Japan’s chief of the Imperial General Staff, signed separately for the armed forces.

Shigemitsu had held major diplomatic posts before and during the war, including ambassadorial assignments and the foreign ministry. His signature represented the civilian government, but the surrender required separate military acceptance because Japan’s armed forces were organized under their own command structure. After the war, Shigemitsu was convicted of war crimes, served a prison sentence, and later returned to Japanese politics.
