Kyushu was the Japanese island targeted by planned Operation Olympic in November 1945.
Olympic was intended to seize the southern third of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. The operation was scheduled for 1 November 1945 and would have used Allied forces assembled in the Pacific, with Okinawa serving as an important staging base.
Capturing southern Kyushu was meant to provide airfields and positions for the next stage of the invasion plan, Operation Coronet. Coronet would have attacked the Kanto Plain near Tokyo on Honshu in spring 1946. Together, the two operations formed Operation Downfall.
Kyushu is sometimes confused with Honshu because Honshu contains Tokyo and was the target of the later operation. Hokkaido and Shikoku were not the main objectives of Olympic. Japan surrendered in August 1945, so the planned landing on Kyushu never occurred.
